No you don't have to tell Joomla you're on PHP5.

The switch to PHP5 was made because well to put it simple PHP4 isn't supported anymore. Not even by its own developers.

I have the same problem and understand it's because my server is using php4 but at the moment i'm not able to upgrade it :(
Is there anyway around this? I can't edit any of the fields at the moment because of this :blink:

No way - you must upgrade to php5.
