Override cb_login template was created by Yorlin
I read some about how to override templates in joomla
docs.joomla.org/How_to_override_the_output_from_the_Joomla!_core

but since cb_login don't have any default template is it possible to override it in some other way or is it just direct hacking mod_cblogin.php for the desired effect?

Best approach is to use CSS to restyle the module. If you're wanting to move elements around code wise then yes you'd need to directly edit the module as it does not have any templates.
