but i think it is unnecessary.
when you have a new posting, there must be a mark.
so, if the mark is not there, it means no new popsting.
the first line implies it all.
Further, it is likely to confuse users at the outset.
If you choose the wrong color, 'new" will look catchy enough to suggest there's new posting -- until and unless they scroll down and read the bottom lines. quite counter-intutive.
it is as good as saying:
if "new" is in color x, it means new.
if "new" is in color y, it means no-new.
signs should be evident without the use of footnotes.
most message boards use the presence/absence (or highlighting/lowlighting) of an icon to convery the message.
