Please forgive my stupid question, but where is the component of groupjive?
In the advanced download I could only find these plugins but no component?

GJ is a component plugin in the same respect as CBSubs. It's installed as a CB Plugin, but will function similar to a full blown extension. Please review documentation included with GJs package for installation and basic usage information.

it's actually a CB plugin... but when you click on the plugin itself in the CB back end plugins zone, you get an interface that is completely at the level of a component. Would be really nice if there were a back end admin component menu for it... but works like a charm and looks sharp.

There actually is. The latest CB Admin Nav module that provides custom drop-down menus for CB and CBSubs also supports GJ 2.x. Simply edit the modules parameters from backend and enable GJ menu if not enabled by default. This won't add a link under "Components" obviously as it's not a Joomla component.
