Can't offer free trial via Stripe

3 years 8 months ago - 3 years 8 months ago #319971 by wjgadmin
Hi,
We'd like to be able to offer a free trial period followed by recurring payments (first month free). When we try that currently, it produces an error on site:

Error
Submitted payment request didn't return an error but didn't complete. Please contact site administrator to check error log.

In the history logs it is as follows:
stripe Stripe Payment Intents API error returned. ERROR: This value must be greater than or equal to 1. CODE: parameter_invalid_integer

I realize the error is due to the value = 0, however is this possible? It is ideal to be able to offer free trials, thank you.

At this time that will not be possible. Payment Intents have a minimum amount requirement of 50 cents. We do not have Setup Intents implemented, which would collect payment information and allow billing later. It's something we'll be considering for a future release.

Thank you for considering this implementation. We believe this is an important feature to eliminate the extra step for the end user, setting up the subscription again. As silly as it is, it could result in fewer sales.

Most appreciated!

I completely understand. It just wasn't easily doable until their Setup Intents API was implemented, which was too new for the rewrite at this time. It was somewhat doable with their older APIs, but the coding overhead and maintenance to get it to work was beyond what we're willing to invest. Basically significant chunks of code and time for a relatively unused feature. It's a lot easier with the new Setup Intents API though so we'll be able to implement that in a future release, but first we needed to move to their latest APIs as we've done with the latest releases.
