Editing the Fields, i.e.Name and Surname Field

M a fairly new user-Please assist.
I have created fields and given them specific rights in as far as required and visible options.
The problem is that my 'name & surname' fields are set at 'not visible' and as a result dont appear on the field manager pane.
how can i access these 2 field so that i can activate them to be visible?
