Is there a way to have the standard Joomla search module return CB user names/profiles in a search?

There is indeed a CB searchbot. It's also simple enough that the kind of information you need in your profile search results could be requested or spliced in.

The cb_mambot file is no longer available at that URL you sent. Do you know if it is available eslewhere?
