I also have been bouncing against the annoying fact that custom fields are not possible. You can't put an image into a field.
That's why I've messing around a bit with my language file!

[code:1]J!/components/com_comprofiler/plugin/language/Dutch[/code:1] (or whatever yours is)

[code:1]DEFINE ('_UE_MALE','<img src="/images/comprofiler/custom/male.gif">');[/code:1]
(or any other image)

you could also do something like:
[code:1]DEFINE ('_UE_MALE','<font color="#00cc44"><b>Male</b></font>');[/code:1]

after all your new defines you can use this in the fields so it'll be translated into whatever you made of it

there's only one flaw in this whole system: EVERYWHERE, EVERYTHING will be as you've defined in the language file!
