I am wondering whether anyone is able to help me along in the right direction.

I am working on a project for which I need to have both individual registered members and registered interest groups.

Registered users can to apply to become members of one or more of the interest groups. Interest groups need their own moderators with the power to accept or reject applications from registered users to join their interest group.

I therefore need each interest group to have its own appointed administrators with administrative controls. In additiona to membership controls the groups need their own file areas and image galleries with the ability to make files and images viewable by either

(a) All site visitors
(b) Members of other designated registered interest groups
(c) Restricted to members of their own group

Are there any modules that will help me achieve these goals.

Only one I know of is groupjive but I am not sure it has all the features you are requesting.
