There was a previous thread about this for RC1

Maybe radio or checkbox (single) would be a better field type for this purpose? You could make it required to ensure it's filled in on registration.

well i guess that was a bad example. I often need a select-one-of-multiple and need to validate whether they have chosen anything or left it at default.
Its a common validation need.
I could probably hack it in myself if anyone knows what file the validation is in?
