Plugin didn't solve the problem. I enabled it but when the session times out and the user does anything they go back to the cb_login but another login displays as well.

Do you, by any chance have login enabled on Registration page in the CB configuration?

The "Show login on registration page" is set to NO. Changing it to YES did not make a difference. Is this the setting you were referring to?

I have registrations disabled, only the users defined by me are allowed to log in if that makes any difference.

Well, you want to disable the Joomla registration in Joomla Global Configuration, but yes, disabling CB Registration is going to cause problems.

Try CB Passphrase . Maybe that will allow you the functionality you're hoping for without compromising the functionality of CB.
