An image can only be uploaded in the frontend when the 'required' checkbox for this field is set to 'Yes' (in the backend)
When this field is set to no, the browse-button to pick an image does not appear!

Someone found the same problem? I think it's a bug in this new release...
I checked the source with firebug but didn't find any errors..

You dont have to set the field to required if there´s only one image defined, but otherwise indeed you have to set the field to required. I dont think thats what it should do....
Also, when you show an image in the search results of a list )list management', you dont see the image and also you cannot link to the image..... It is said that only the avatar works fine in this release, I hope RC3 is meanth and not the final stable release...
So, I dont have a solution but i will post it if i find something.

Hello Henk, let me know if you found something, i installed this RC3 release especially for this new image-field... and it's frustrating it doesn't work...
