It depends on how you're using the CBSubs system.

In our instance, we're using "Subscriptions" also to allow access to download a pdf, so the users view this as a product, not necessarily as a subscription upgrade. We assign them into a special "Member" category manually, then they are asked to "activate" another subscription that allows them to download a pdf product.

The purchasing of a "product/merchandise" didn't work for us for this pdf in our case, because purchasing a product wouldn't activate an content or modules, and we also needed to remove their access to the pdfs if possible. Our system is integrated with FileOpen Security software, that activates only on a frontend "purchase" of a subscription.
