Then something has been misconfigured on your end - I have no issues setting up the same use case on my test sites and in all the tutorials here:

hi,

found it: the "Profile" menu entry was set to registered. i set ti to public and now it works. Strange.

By default this is set to Public - if yours was set to registered then is was done manually.
