Extended characters not shown correctly in lists

Hello,

I have lists where extended characters such as é, ø and ë are shown correctly in the admin but are shown as √© (instead of é) when displayed in lists on the website's frontend. Using CB1.9 on a J! 2.5.11 site.

Does aybody have a suggestion as to what went wrong and how to solve this please? many thanks in advance for any input,
