when a member updates a certain field, in our case cb_memberpayref , if the field is different from what was stored in the database from the previous year ( this is the bank transfer reference which should be unique each time ) then we need an email to be sent off.
the email part is working ok, but it is not triggered by updating of the specific field.
Please provide a screenshot of your auto action. It's always best to test without a Condition as that's typically where users make configuration mistakes. This will ensure the action is even working at all.

Your condition on the left is not a valid condition. You're also matching the field against it self so that condition will never pass. As I understand it you're trying to match the new value against the old value, which can be done with the below condition.
[cb_memberpayref] Not Equal To [var3_cb_memberpayref]
var3 is $oldUserComplete, which contains the users profile data before the update.
