I tried making the thumbnail smaller...and it did nothing.

Make sure Image Software is set to ImageMagick (don't know if you have it, but my host provides it by default) and that "Always resample avatar uploads" is set to yes aswell. Thats all in that same Images tab. Then change the Max. Thumbnail Width and Height both to 32 or 48 or something... if that doesnt work, then I don't know - it works fine for me

Oh - make sure you clear your cache too. If you're using Firefox 3.x, the CTRL+F5 which is supposed to reload and ignore cache is pretty buggy (even on the latest 3.5 beta) so clear cache and try again.

ImageMagick isn't on my host...and I cleared my cache.

Changing your avatar size will only affect new uploads. The resizing is done at the time of upload using GD2 or IM.

Ah, okay. I reuploaded the avatar and now it's normal Except for the fact transparency is replaced by white.

Ah... Yeah I think you'll need ImageMagic installed to get that. Well it works for me anyway and thats what I have selected. Glad you got it sorted =)
