Profile update error message

Profile update error message was created by flappleton
When I try to update some of the profiles I get the following error message:
Duplicate entry 'principals/JamesM' for key 'uri'
I seem to remember this happened a while back but I can't remember what I did to fix it.

We don't have a "uri" column in the database. I'm not aware of Joomla having one either. My guess is something 3rd party acting on Joomla user store behavior. Check what 3rd party extensions you have installed that might be acting on user storage.
