Link one user to another with custom field?

I'm looking for a way to create a custom field that would give a drop down list of other users, so you could assign one user to another.

Specifically, I need to assign each user from the "customer" list a sales rep from the "sales_rep" list.

Does anyone know of a way to do this? I'm not afraid to hack into the php code if necessary, just wondering if anyone can give some hints on where to get started.

Use connections (creating a new connection with your own title) and a new memberlist with that field included filtered by your title. It will show a list but not a dropdown of all those connected with that connection type.

Edited to add: You may have to upgrade to 1.2 Stable, which is recommended anyway since 1.0/1.1 is obsolete, for the ability to add new connection titles. I can't remember if that's a new ability or not.
