Yes, put it into your main joomla template CSS file.
Or if you have a special CSS file for all your CUSTOM styles... put it in there.
PS: You are right, there is a parameter "CSS area" in the module backend. But you will have the same problems and even more. For your purpose and for easier editing, you should NOT use that textarea.
