What are the proper fields to have or the proper methods to get google (or other search engines) to crawl profiles?
Are there any plugins that do this?
Ideally I need to be able to provide a user populated fields for keywords and a description for each profile that the search engines can pick up by default.
Please advise.

Mostly just metadata and ensuring profiles are public. Joomla is pretty terrible with metadata management though and you may want to seek out a 3rd party Joomla extension at Joomla.org to allow custom metadata on a page by page basis. Otherwise the meta description specified in global configuration gets applied to every page. Alternatively you can leave that description blank and Google will use the first few bits of content on a users profile as part of their description. For example it'll have their name, online status, etc.. in the search results description.

I am familiar with 404sef as I use it on one of the other sites...it works really well for short urls. I dont know about anything else that it does though.
I want to find something that I can basically add a user populated field for keywords and description and then tell that component to use those for the page.
I dont want to leave the main config blank as other parts of the site itself will need to be indexed.
Our profiles are public, only a small bit of data is private and mostly its just owner creator access thats private, the content they create from the Elite profiles is public.
