Can you suggest which collation setting might work in my case?

No, I am not familiar with Chinese character usage in SQL.

I'm not smart enough to understand how language strings work, and I couldn't find anything in the support pages that made any sense to me.

However, I installed "Admin Tools" www.akeebabackup.com/products/admin-tools.html and used it to change the database collation "one click".

With some experimenting I found that UTF8_unicode_ci did the trick.
