I need to create an on-line address book for students of a local high school band that is only accessible to one Joomla user group (and higher groups such as staff and super admins as shown below), that consists of all the members in that one group. Additional lists will allow for filtering of the current students by section.

When users sign up, they identify the section (using a CB drop-down field) to which they belong (e.g. Trumpet, Flute, percussion, etc.). Once the user graduates, their profile will still list their instrument as an alum of the program. To identify a current member an admin will place the student ID in the "Current Members" group, which will both grant access to the on-line address book as well as add the individual to the address book. When they leave the group they will be taken out of the Current Members group and lose access to the list and remove their names from the address book.
I know I need an advanced filter, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to verify they belong to the Current Members group in the filter. I'll also need to be able to filter additional lists based on the first (all the Trumpet players in the Current Member group). Do you have a suggestion on how to write a filter that can check the Joomla! group membership?
