There is no such functionality in GJ and no means to do it in GJ. You'd have to completely alter the join process to put a form between the button and the actual storage of the GJ user as pending. Approval already handles the pending process, but it has no means of adding any additional information beyond that. The users profiles however can be reviewed by the group owner, admins, or moderators before accepting so whatever information you're wanting them to supply could be made part of their profile.
