I tried your alternative method to get this working. I kind of had to guess at many fields in the auto action and had some questions since it doesn't seem to work for me...
Guessing the mode should be 'like'. Correct?
Should the asset have brackets around it? Usually the tooltip shows examples with brackets, but on the Asset field in this situation the tooltip shows without.
If this is the correct mode, there are options for 'Type'. Since you have to select [for example] 'like', 'love', etc., would you need to have 5 actions to cover every type of like?
Guessing if you want this to be just like FB, once you get it working for 'like', you'd need to duplicate the process for follow and tag.
Also, I have the trigger set to 'activity_onAfterCreateLike'.
