Ok, a new CB Connect build release is now available. Within CB Connect > Parameters > Google > Application you can now toggle "OpenID Connect" to "Yes". This will use OpenID Connect endpoint to request profile data bypassing the People API requirement. This however has substantially less information available. It can only provide the following: id, name, email, and profile picture. Please give this a try and see if it will be suitable for your needs.
