Spambots beating captcha 2.2

I too am getting increasing number of spambots registering on my site, running 1.5.9 with legacy (due to using fireboard).

I have checked my J! config and it is set to not allow registrations, CB is set to yes, independant of site. Fireboard is set to use CB.

Another site this is also happening on does not even have Fireboard installed, so this might well be a red herring. Seems a bit weird that it's recently started happening. Tends to be from the same or similar domains but don't seem to be able to block by particular domains in CB - there are references to a plugin which I can't find!

How do you "programmatically" check that the name entered is "Tiger Wooods" and prevent in advance the registration from being submitted?

It isn't just Tiger Woods. The security question is "favorite pro golfer" which is relevant to the site since it is a golf site. There are many answers which would be appropriate and all profiles are manually checked.

Manually checking profiles is the best way to assure that the ones who do get past the captcha are still real or members you really want.

For instance when manually checking the city may say Los Angeles but the country says Bulgaria. The about me may say jfjfjf or something.

Those types of profiles are rejected. If the site is about networking then all the fields should be filled out properly.

Also, it isn't some special code to add that field, just a standard, required CB field for fav golfer.

CB/Joomla golf site: www.thegolfspace.com
Geek/joomla site: www.tkserver.com

Check out my Joomla/CB projects:

* LIKE thumbs up system for "liking" content items
* Karma - CB user rating system
* Golf Score Tracker
* Jitter - status update system. "What's on your mind?"
* CB Author Plug - Shows CB author link and avatar in content items. J1.5 compatible and very customizable!

Found on my web site or in the Joomlapolis Directory !

My mistake about Woods. I read it and it went right by. Manually checking is certainly doable, but if you can programmatically prevent 90% of spammers from even making it through the registration process then you are ultimately in a stronger position as well as less irritable. When I get some time I'll take a look at the registration code and see if it's something I can mess with and stop these intruders.

if ( $firstname == $lastname ) { echo "Go away"; exit; }

If someone can point out the relevant files that will help.

Hey people! :)

Was wondering if I downloaded from a free Fonts website (like dafont.com), a super fancy Font type that has the characters in different angles by default and/or some Fonts that have a cartoonish look, if it would help more to stop the spam bots?

In this way, it would be some "deformed" Fonts.

And if I'm not mistaking, all you have to do is add the font file in the fonts folder of CBcaptcha and add a line in captchasecurityimages.php that calls it. Right?

Cheers,

Denis.
