Thank you krileon, I pretty much knew that you would not have left the code this way, but wanted to make sure. I will check your suggestions below and report back what I find just in case it might be helpful to others.

I took your suggestion and turned off SEF, and sure enough it worked! I am heavily using SEF address links in articles, etc., so I will try to find a way around this problem. But your suggestion identified the problem with they way I was building the site so thanks once more.

Are you using 3rd party SEF? Joomla SEF shouldn't be giving invalid URLs like that. If using 3rd party please test with just Joomla SEF.

No just the standard Joomla SEF in Admin > Global Configuration with the text "Search Engine Friendly URLs > Yes/No", I will poke around some more to see if I can shed some light on it.

Did you rename your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess ?

There are actually both htaccess.txt and .htaccess files in the root folder of the Joomla site. The only difference is one line that is "RewriteBase /orot/" in the .htaccsss file and that line is commented out in the htaccess.txt file
