I've updated this post because there is a better solution and does not require any code hacks.

I'm now using the ADJR Disable Joomla Registration plugin (Nov 4 2008 version). It redirects core Joomla Registrations and Logins, fixing the problem noted below.

extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1236/Itemid,35/

It works great on my Joomla 1.57 (legacy mode) and CB1.2RC3 site . I'd recommend this plugin to anybody who is using Community Builder & Joomla 1.5x .
