IE Login Issue

12 years 4 weeks ago #47967 by lnemeth
Greetings.

I'm having login troubles with Internet Explorer users. I've gone through these forums and tried the following suggestions:

1. Check version.php (it matches);
2. Clear out sessions table (doesn't help);
3. Redirect users after login (doesn't help);
4. Switched from CB login module to Joomla login module (makes no difference).
5. Set redirect after login for the Joomla login module (also makes no difference).

The symptoms have been seen and reported in the forums before. If no redirect is set, the page refreshes when the login button is clicked, but no content is displayed. The user is, however, technically logged in (a session appears in the db). If a redirect is set up, IE users get a "You are not authorized to view this resource" message.

There are two aspects of my installation that differ from the norm. First, it's a closed site -- all menus and content (except the login modules) are restricted to registered users (login is set to public). Second, Joomla is running in a subdirectory of the domain (e.g., www.mysite.com/myjoomlasite ).

I'm on Joomla 1.0.13 (fresh install, not an upgrade) and CB 1.1.

I'd appreciate any guidance or assistance you can provide. I have looked through the forums diligently to find a solution, to no avail. I even bought the documentation, hoping it might address this subject (it doesn't, but no worries, I'm happy to support your work!).

Thanks in advance.

Could it be a joomla sessions cookies issue ?

i'm thinking of the website URL with and without www. in front of it. If the url on which the user logs in doesn't match, it gives typically this...

See this:
www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,/func,view/catid,43/id,47364/#47364

probably also applies to joomla 1.0.13...

P.s. thanks for your support, and hope that the docs will bring you other infos and things to discover :)

Well, I found at least two solutions, which I'll post in case others experience this problem.

First, I discovered that Joomla was creating two sessions at each IE user's login. The first had the proper username, etc.; the second was empty.

There are numerous posts on that issue on the Joomla forums, though primarily references admin login problems, and I found a couple of suggestions.

One is to change the login default to check the "Remember Me" box. I've no idea why that works, but it does.

The second, seemingly more reasonable, fix was to edit php.ini to change the line:

session.save_path = /tmp

to

session.save_path = tmp

Once I did that, everything is fine! IE logins create only a single session.

Now the bad news: I learned that my site is really, really ugly in IE! Borders around the divs, improper div locations, and more. But, I don't guess CB can fix that for me!

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Cool that you could fix your sessions issue :)
And many thanks to share the solution B)

Regarding IE bad rendering, as it's another subject, I replied to your question in a separate thread, to stay on-topic in this one ;) :

well shoot. I was hoping to implement the php.ini tweak but for whatever reason, I don't have that session info in my php.ini file.

thought that fix made a lot of sense because I have seen other IE specific issues like this when an unnecessary "/" is put at the beginning of a relative path...

mod note: edited so the \\\\ becomes visible...

oops meant /

i have finally resolved this problem on my site. for anyone having a problem like this...see below.

from what i can tell the problem was with Community Builder. i was surprised to find many, many people having this problem.

i tried a couple of quick and easy possible fixes. luckily one of them seems to of fixed the issue. i'm not 100% which one actually fixed it for me. here is what i did:

1. Added a index.php as the "Login Redirection URL" to the CB Login module. This is explained in more detail here:
http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,38/func,view/id,42782/catid,43/limit,6/limitstart,6/

2. Force "remember me" box checked in CD Login module. Explained here (third post on first page):
http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/func,view/catid,40/id,47967/

3. Turn off SEF. More info here (second post on first page):
http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,38/func,view/id,42782/catid,43/limit,6/limitstart,0/

A number of other proposed solutions that could/have helped others have been:

1. Cache/security restrictions. More info http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,38/func,view/id,38775/catid,30/limit,6/limitstart,0/

2. www versus non-www URL. More info here:
http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/Itemid,/func,view/catid,43/id,47364/#47364

3. PHP.ini - relates to #3 above. More info here (see posts towards bottom of first page):
http://www.joomlapolis.com/component/option,com_joomlaboard/func,view/catid,40/id,47967/

Again, there were quite a few posts here about this - you may find other possible solutions as well if none of these work.

good luck!
