upgrading is causing accounts to become unconfirme

Ok, sounds like a configuration issue then. You're requiring a subscription for a user to be active, but the user does not have a subscription. This poses a problem. The user should attempt to login and renew their subscription (if subscription is required will be presented with page to renew or purchase a subscription). When you confirm the user your plan has unconfirmed them directly after confirming them.
