I guess the country field could be made into a standard feature. But then we would run into some of the following problems:

• size increase in distribution package
• to do it right we would need to add this information to all our language plugins
• People will always want to make changes anyway (cant please everyone)

The end result of the manual import process (did you read this?) described in the tips and tricks section is again a drop-down country list. The actual process can be easily replicated to create a us state list, zip code list, etc.
