I'm just wondering if there was a way for people to host their avatars elsewhere and get like a hotlink from it and use it as their avatars in CB?

No, CB does not have any such feature to host external avatars. You can fake this using substitutions and a text or webaddress fieldtype. Using substitutions such as the following example would render the external image.
