It is possible to achieve what you want using Peter Van Westens (NoNumber!) ReReplacer Joomla Component.

You only need to enter your list of bad words once then tailor which general areas you want replacement to happen (this is worth doing rather than just setting 'everywhere' to moderate server load).

Thanks for pointing that plugin out. It looks like it could be a good option.

It is good, but you must approach the process sytematically and methodically - if you just assume you can whack a load of swear words in and do nothing else you will get into trouble later on...
