user groups and menu options

Hi everyone, new to cb so please bear with!
I was just wondering whether vb allows you to set more user groups than the deafult registered/special/moderator/administrator that joomla does.
Also, is it possible to set a usermenu link that only appears for one group of users but not for others.
e.g. Can I make a group called 'captains' and have the 'add item' link only appear on their usermenu, not just normal 'registered' users?
thoughts?
