We have created some custom fields that are required fields for registration. One of the fields is "How did you find out about this site".

There are several options in a single-select drop-down. One user was always getting this dialog box (or something equivilent) when completing the registration:

"The following field is required: How did u hear about this site...."

I confirmed that this was only happening with one of the options in the list.

After looking at the field, the problematic option had a trailing space. Removing the trailing space returned the registration behaviour to normal.
