If you just want to creat a few levels that actually share some of the same existing permissions that are used in Joomla, you could always change some values in the db.

We currently have hacked the db to include membership levels as children to registered. All the modules/components work since we have only added a few group ids to the mix. Most code is written to choose ID.

Dont get me wrong, im not the coder, but I know our programmer didnt do much more than that, there may be some minor changes and we have basically what we need to start.
