That's an acceptable alternative, but it's just dodging the problem. There's something wrong with your SEF. Especially if your entire site is "bricked" when you disable SEF; clearly not a good sign. You should address your SEF issues. The issue is the URL to the image is likely being rewritten to at a location the image does not exist, thus causing it to not display.
